Job Title: Weekend Nursing Supervisor 
Report To: Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

  1. Plans, implements, and coordinates nursing services for designated shift.
  2. Supervises and evaluated performance of staff nurses and nursing assistants on designated shift.
  3. Assists in-service director in coordination of orientation of new trainees and in-service of all nursing department employees.
  4. Assists director of nursing and assistant director of nursing in assuring quality nursing care and agency compliance with Medicaid and State Health requirements.
  5. Performs duties of staff nurse as required.
  6. Responsible for promoting and maintaining good inter-personnel and intra-departmental relationships and carrying out administrative procedures in
  7. conformity with nursing home policy.
  8. Responsible for enhancing professional development of staff in areas of creative, skills, behavior, and personal appearance.
  9. Responsible for keeping assistant director of nursing and director of nursing services fully informed regarding needs, unusual occurrences, problems, and accomplishments to establish and maintain lines of communications and maintain lines of communication and to enhance continuity of quality patient care.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  1. Plans effective administration of assigned shift.
  2. Coordinates through assistant director of nursing, director of nursing and staff nurse all unit and patient care assignments.
  3. Responsible for knowing Fire, Safety, and Disaster Manual and how to direct subordinates in prevention drills, emergency, and other related situations.
  4. Responsible for care and use of supplies and equipment.
  5. Assumes responsibility for staffing on assigned shift.
  6. Assesses and evaluates nursing service needs.
  7. Responsible for in-depth assessment of assigned new admissions and re-admissions within one week of admission.
  8. Responsible for identification of patient’s problems and care plan initiation and implementation including periodic patient reassessment care plan evaluation and revision at least every three months.
  9. Assures that transfers instructions and instructions to patients and/or families are furnished in writing when transferred or discharged.
  10. Assists Assistant Director of Nursing and Director of Nursing services in evaluating nursing personnel as directed by policy or as indicated.
  11. Evaluates all subordinates on assigned shift on a day-to-day basis.
  12. Assists, as delegated by in-service director, orientation if staff nurse to the unit.
  13. As directed by inservice director, assists in orientation of new licensed staff to medications system.
  14. Assists staff nurse in assignment of nursing assistant trainee to work with CNA nursing assistant.
  15. Assists staff nurse with trainee’s unit performance evaluation and communicates to in-service director trainee’s additional educational needs.
  16. Assists staff nurse in scheduling nursing assistants for continuous inservice education with inservice director.
  17. Promotes favorable attitudes regarding orientation and inservic education.
  18. Assures that required monthly summaries are written with substance and in compliance with Medicaid and State Health requirements.
  19. Assures that medical orders are properly transferred and implemented.
  20. Responsible for patient care plans.
  21. Responsible for obtaining physician’s order for nursing procedures requiring orders.
  22.  Assures completion of required Medicaid forms by appropriate licensed staff members.Assures that all narcotics and controlled drugs are in correct count for shift.
  23. Assures that medications are given as directed, or responsibility withheld, with appropriate documentation.
  24. Assists Assistant Director of Nursing in review of patients’ charts to assure medical and nursing compliance with State Health and Medicaid requirements.
  25. Promotes harmonious relationships among co-workers, other departments, including administration, patients, their families, and visitors.
  26. Responsible for following and fostering use of established lines of communication within the nursing department and between n departments.
  27. Assures conformity to nursing home policy.
  28. Serves as a channel to administration in conveying staff’s suggestions for effective change.
  29. Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development through participation in in-service programs, attending staff meetings, and reading professional journals, etc.
  30. Interprets principles of good management to nursing personnel and services as a role model in implementation and application of these principles in daily work.
  31. Provides opportunities for staff to solve problems and develop management and nursing skills under appropriate supervision.
  32. Recognizes individual and group strengths and utilizes strengths to improve weaknesses.

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Current registration with Virginia State Board of Nursing.
  • At least one year of experience in supervisory capacity in a hospital or extended care facility, including experience in geriatric and psychiatric nursing.
  • Good mental and physical health, sound judgment, and high moral standards, and a sincere desire to work with the aged and those with limited capacity for self-care. Patience and compassion essential.
  • Ability to manage and supervise a nursing unit. Interest and ability when teaching others and assisting them in their skills.
  • Capacity to grasp new theories and principles and put them into effect.
  • Ability to make independent decisions.
  • Membership in professional organization desired. Attendance at workshops and institutes in this field.
  • Verbal ability is necessary to understand patients’ charts, doctors’ orders, nursing care plan and medication orders and to communicate with patients and staff.
  • Manual dexterity is necessary to coordinate hands, eyes, and fingers in administering medications and treatments. Some clerical perception is required to prepare records and charts.

  • Well-lighted, well-ventilated rooms and halls.
  • Walks, sit, stands intermittently during workday.
  • Exposed to infection, odors, and subject to personality and mood changes peculiar to aged and infirm.
  • Some lifting and turning of patients and equipment.
  • Must deal with patients, families, and public on personal basis.
  • Required to make independent decisions.
  • Required to handle emergency situations of all types.
